About

Enjoy an afternoon in the Music Garden, featuring a distinctly Toronto-diverse trio of musicians. This trio of Labyrinth Ensemble musicians will explore a repertoire acquired over four years of study with expert musicians Âriâ Mohâfez, Maliheh Moradi and Evgenios Voulgaris. Pieces from Iranian, Turkish, Arabic and the contemporary modal repertoire will be presented, interspersed with solos from each performer showcasing the technical prowess and sonic richness of modal improvisation.

The musicians unify the distinct but historically connected music of Asia and the Mediterranean on their own terms rather than altering tunings and rhythms to match European music theory, as is often the norm. Through this learning, Labyrinth Ensemble musicians are challenged to expand their musical vocabularies and subvert expectations by highlighting the uniqueness of melding a myriad of individual musical experiences with modal techniques and repertoire.

About Labyrinth Ensemble

Roa Lee, Aysel Taghi-Zada and Sasan Salaseli are all members of the Labyrinth Ensemble, a group dedicated to the study and performance of sonic traditions rooted in modal music, experimenting with sounds that stretch from Afghanistan through Central and West Asia and beyond.

Lee is a Korean gayageum musician who blends traditional Korean music with global influences through performance, composition and collaboration. Taghi-Zada is a passionate violinist devoted to the performance of classical and contemporary music. Salaseli, an Iranian Tonbak and Daf player, has been performing since 1985 and teaching for over 20 years. A student of Jahangir Malek, Bijan Kamkar and Bahman Rajabi, he toured Scandinavia with the Sarayan Group and founded Iran’s first percussion school, Abidar, in 2007.
