Special Program – In Partnership with DanceWorks

How can the experience of being an audience member at a performance inspire multiple forms of creative expression?

Program Description

DanceWorks presents Dancers of Damelahamid’s: Raven Mother

Dancers of Damelahamid is an intergenerational Indigenous dance company from the northwest coast of British Columbia with a rich history of masked dance. The company emerged in the 1960s out of an urgency to ensure that Indigenous artistic practices were not lost after the lifting of the Potlatch Ban.

Raven Mother is the Dancers of Damelahamid’s most ambitious production featuring movement, song, regalia, sculpture, and design. The work honours the late Elder Margaret Harris and illustrates the vast impact Elder Harris had on the revitalization of Indigenous dance in Canada.

Prior to the performance, students will work with Educators in a half-day movement workshop.

Program Objectives

By the end of the Special Program – In Partnership with DanceWorks program, students will:

  • Attend a dance performance, gaining an understanding of the role of an audience member and performer.
  • Participate in a post-performance question and answer session.
  • If the workshop is booked, students will engage with the elements of dance and build connections to dance as a form of creative expression.
