SHSM: Clay Sculptures

How can the relationship between form and function influence the creation of your sculpture?

Program Description

Our SHSM programs allow students to gain a certificate for participation in a three-hour workshop as required by the Ontario Ministry of Education. In our Contemporary Clay Sculptures workshop, students are introduced to sculpture’s rich history and contemporary practice. One of our Artist Educators leads this workshop and will introduce students to various hand-building techniques. Students will also engage in a Q&A with a current Artist-in-Residence from Harbourfront Centre’s Craft and Design Studio.

Program Objectives

By the end of the SHSM: Clay Sculptures program, students will:

  • View historical and contemporary examples of sculptures.
  • Work with an Artist Educator to create their own clay sculpture using a pinch pot, slab, coil and additional hand building techniques.
  • Meet with a Harbourfront Centre Artist-in-Residence to gain a further appreciation for the personal and professional pathways to building a sustainable career in the arts.
