About Your Practice

About Your Practice

Tell us about your current artistic practice.

My artistic practice focuses on painting as a way to explore emotion, imagination, and the complexity of human experience. I am interested in creating work that captures attention visually while encouraging viewers to look deeper, interpret what they see, and develop their own connection to the piece. My work often draws on contrasting imagery, symbolism, colour, and expressive compositions to create a sense of mystery, tension, and meaning.

I approach each painting as an opportunity to experiment, develop new ideas, and push beyond familiar ways of seeing. I am continually exploring how visual elements can communicate feelings and ideas that are difficult to express through words alone. Rather than limiting my work to one interpretation, I want my paintings to leave room for curiosity, personal reflection, and conversation.

What would you like to develop during your residency?

During my residency, I would like to push my artistic practice to the next level by blending my existing painting styles with the grandeur, architectural detail, and atmosphere of Roman cathedrals. I want to explore how classical architecture, monumental structures, symbolism, and my own contemporary visual language can come together to create work that feels both timeless and original.

My goal is to experiment with scale, composition, texture, and imagery to develop a more ambitious and distinctive body of work. I want to challenge myself creatively, move beyond my current boundaries, and discover new ways to communicate ideas through painting.

As a Toronto-based emerging artist, I also want my work to reflect the ambition, diversity, and creative energy of the city. I hope to develop a visual identity that connects historical influences with a contemporary Toronto perspective, contributing something distinctive to its growing arts community. Ultimately, I see this residency as an opportunity to take risks, refine my artistic voice, and create work that represents both my personal evolution and the city I am building my practice in.

Why is the Harbourfront Centre Craft & Design Residency the right next step for your practice?

The Harbourfront Centre Craft & Design Residency is an opportunity for me to challenge my artistic boundaries, experiment with new techniques, and develop a more distinctive visual identity. I want to blend my existing painting styles with the grandeur and architectural influence of Roman cathedrals, creating work that connects historical inspiration with contemporary expression. The residency would give me the opportunity to grow through experimentation, gain new perspectives, and push my work to the next level. As an emerging Toronto artist, I want to contribute a unique perspective to the city's creative community while building a stronger, more ambitious artistic practice.

Technical Section

Technical Readiness

Describe your experience with the materials, processes and equipment relevant to the Studio to which you are applying..

I have a strong interest in painting and developing my artistic practice through experimentation with different materials, techniques, and visual styles. Growing up around art in general helped shape my creativity and appreciation for artistic expression. I am comfortable working independently on paintings, developing concepts, experimenting with color, and bringing ideas to life through composition and imagery. I also have some past experience with pottery, which introduced me to working with different materials and three-dimensional forms. I would like to build on this foundation by gaining greater experience with new tools, processes, and materials, expanding my technical abilities, and exploring how different craft and design techniques can complement my painting practice.

Residency Readiness

Residency Readiness

Residents work within a shared studio environment. What would you contribute to this environment, and what do you hope to learn from being part of it?

I would contribute a respectful, collaborative, and professional attitude to the shared studio environment. I believe in respecting other artists’ time, space, materials, and creative processes while being a reliable team player. I would prioritize clear communication, cooperation, and maintaining positive relationships with fellow residents, staff, and everyone involved in the establishment. I also value learning from people with different backgrounds and artistic approaches. Through this residency, I hope to gain new perspectives, exchange ideas, learn from other artists’ experiences, and discover new techniques that can strengthen my own practice. I want to contribute to an environment where everyone feels respected, supported, and encouraged to grow creatively.

Tell us about an experience that demonstrates your ability to independently manage and sustain the development of your artistic work.

One experience that demonstrates my independence as an artist was developing a painting concept that combined unusual imagery with deeper symbolic meaning. Rather than following a conventional approach,

I challenged myself to think outside the box by experimenting with composition, contrasting elements and materials, unexpected visual connections to communicate an idea beyond what was immediately visible. I independently developed the concept, made creative decisions throughout the process, and continued refining the work until the different elements came together.

This experience strengthened my ability to trust my instincts, solve creative problems, and stay committed to an idea. It reflects my approach to art: taking risks, exploring new possibilities, and continuously pushing my practice forward.

I'm really creative and I think in terms of big scales and outside of the box I think that would be beneficial to have someone like that around.
