About
Even before the Toronto Raptors and the rallying cry “We the North” became a slogan, basketball in Toronto was deeply rooted in the evolving social and cultural conditions of our city and its people for over a century.
From the Canadian invention of basketball to the early women’s game in 1895, to the first professional basketball game played by the short-lived Toronto Huskies in 1946 and the recent creation of the Toronto Tempo WNBA team, these and many other milestones chart the sport’s development in the city.
Home Game: Toronto Loves Basketball is an exhibition and a series of profiles of fellow Torontonians that reflect our love story for the sport from the Canadian invention of basketball in 1891 to the present day. More than just a game, you will learn how the relationship between basketball and Toronto is unlike any other in the world.
By celebrating the shared joy, hope and myriad histories forged through basketball, Home Game reaffirms our common humanity and defines the city’s global aspirations for the future.
