About Your Practice

About Your Practice

Tell us about your current artistic practice.

My current artistic practice involves the design and execution of murals using a variety of materials—an approach shaped by my academic background (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees) in the restoration of sacred art, during which I discovered numerous fascinating materials and techniques adaptable to diverse contexts.
I am experienced in a wide range of techniques and styles—spanning from canvas painting (incorporating realism, photorealism, abstraction, chromatic effects, the study of complementary colors, etc.) to the use of oil paints, natural pigments with egg-yolk emulsion, watercolors, and acrylics. Furthermore, my experience in art restoration (covering works from the 18th century to the present) has provided me with extensive knowledge of materials.

What would you like to develop during your residency?

I would like to create a unique design—distinct from anything I’ve seen in Toronto so far—that reflects the human touch in mural art. I feel the city is saturated with vector-style designs; while colorful, they often come across as cold. I am particularly fascinated by Inuit aesthetics and their color palette, as they truly embody that human element. I want to explore this direction further by incorporating realistic elements to convey a sense of authenticity and the human touch.

Why is the Harbourfront Centre Craft & Design Residency the right next step for your practice?

For me, as for any artist, landing such an opportunity is a dream come true; while there are many occasions in the city or across the country, a *real* opportunity is one where you actually achieve the goal you applied for.
My aim is to create more high-quality designs using a distinctive approach and a variety of materials—such as carbon-absorbing paint or other unconventional materials.

Technical Section

Technical Readiness

Describe your experience with the materials, processes and equipment relevant to the Studio to which you are applying..

I have over 10 years of experience working with PCs, iPads, and software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Blender (for design); I am also experienced with various types of paints and artistic techniques, as well as a range of working media. I am a sociable person, eager to collaborate, help, learn, and get involved in any task; I enjoy being around people who can show me new things. Even though I have my own experience, I believe we can learn from one another, as others also have valuable knowledge to share.

Residency Readiness

Residency Readiness

Residents work within a shared studio environment. What would you contribute to this environment, and what do you hope to learn from being part of it?

It would be wonderful to share the studio and the environment; I think it will take some time to get to know the people around you, but after that, you’ll be able to work comfortably with various individuals and materials. Perhaps we could brainstorm together—whether to succeed in life or to plan an exhibition—or maybe take part in someone else's show, or explore other options. I don't know… I’ve been involved in many projects over the years. But you have to be truly present in these projects—engaging with people or working on your own, while simultaneously dealing with designs and materials.

Tell us about an experience that demonstrates your ability to independently manage and sustain the development of your artistic work.

My skills, my presence, and my approach to creation—whether regarding my current works or those from this stage of my journey—bear witness to my commitment to art. Reaching this level required great dedication and time; witnessing my evolution from restorer to creator and bringing my art to life is a genuine source of inspiration.
