| About Your Practice | About Your Practice |
| Tell us about your current artistic practice. | I investigate the adaptation and evolution of consciousness, examining how identity, memory, the bodymind, and spacetime adapt through a diffractive shaping of material and meaning. I'm particularly interested in conveying this universal truth and paradoxical tension: vulnerability is the catalyst for collective wonder and connection. Currently, I'm engaged primarily with sculpture, installation, and drawing, merging and recontextualizing mediums and materials. My process is intuitive, discursive, repetitive, and tactile, following the movement of thought as it expands and multiplies, revealing elusive patterns and perspectives that playfully gesture toward the ineffable ecstasy that weaves itself within the ordinary. I want to continue working with materials that coincide in their optical properties: reflective, translucent, or diffractive, demonstrating that our true identity is energy, which is never lost, only transformed. |
| What would you like to develop during your residency? | I'd like to explore metal as textile, oxidation as pigment, and pattern as shape, demonstrating the elusive certainty or solidity of matter by dissolving its meaning and showing its different physical states and manifestations. Metal is typically associated with industrialism, but this is an androcentric construction and representation of this material. I'd like to approach it from the feminine perspective, embracing material as a cycle. Iron is present in our blood and flows through our vascular system, which intertwines with other tissues, creating a living tapestry in us and all around us. Death is the cumulative oxidation of this web, an invisible and infinite cycle. I'd like to experiment with new weaving techniques using copper wire and find a partnership with glass, and elucidate the idea that boundaries do not have to separate us, and in fact can serve as a structure for unity. |
| Why is the Harbourfront Centre Craft & Design Residency the right next step for your practice? | The Harbourfront Centre Craft & Design Residency would be a perfect place to further develop my emerging practice by immersing myself in techniques, studios, and community that would undoubtedly enrich and cultivate it. I am a self-taught artist, avid researcher, and quick study, and I am confident that having access to a space that can nurture and support this learning over a sustained period of time would be a catalyst for the next stage of my creative expression and practice. I moved back to Toronto a year ago, after 5 years in Montreal, where I began my practice. Immersing myself and connecting with the Toronto art community, cross-pollination and support are equally as important to me as developing my work. My process takes time, and having a year to engage with the Harbourfront Centre community would allow me to foster meaningful relationships. |

| Describe your experience with the materials, processes and equipment relevant to the Studio to which you are applying.. | I've been working with steel and copper wire for the past 5 years, using a looping technique, and recently I've developed a way of weaving that involves twisting 0.01mm copper wire into thread with 4 extensions that can continue the pattern. I've also been working with patina on copper and steel to give the metal its earthly colour. My approach doesn't follow convention or tradition; it learns from it use these differently, giving a new result. I'd like to learn how to use weaving equipment and new weaving techniques and find ways to scale them with wire. |

| Residents work within a shared studio environment. What would you contribute to this environment, and what do you hope to learn from being part of it? | My greatest contribution is spatial awareness. I am a three-dimensional thinker and have the ability to organize deconstructed patterns to optimize space. Craft can be very focused and concentrated on a specific dimension, and I am able to translate details at a larger scale. My strengths are spatial and structural at scale. Because I am self-taught, I'd greatly benefit from learning traditional techniques and perspectives. |
| Tell us about an experience that demonstrates your ability to independently manage and sustain the development of your artistic work. | Before I became an artist, I had a 16-year career in digital media marketing. I have been a self-taught, self-directed full-time artist since 2022. That year, I received my first grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, and I developed a body of work that opened up opportunities for me, like the residency with Arsenal Contemporary. Since then, I have completely abandoned my previous life, powered solely by my conviction and love for art and exploration of ideas that are unsayable. My previous experience as a marketing professional within commercial/corporate environments has taught me how to manage and optimize projects, time, budget, and creative energy. |
