Born into the life of a child soldier in the war-torn region of Southern Sudan on an unknown date, Emmanuel Jal managed to survive and emerge as a recording artist, achieving worldwide acclaim for his unique style of hip-hop and Afro-pop with its message of peace and reconciliation. That message has carried through all of Jal’s work, whether it be his memoir Warchild or his widely-shared Ted Talk. Jal has been nominated for two JUNOs in the Best International Album category, and he has released six studio albums: Gua, Ceasefire, Warchild, See Me Mama, The Key and Naath.

About Emmanuel Jal
From his start in life as a child soldier in the war-torn region of Southern Sudan, Emmanuel Jal has come through personal struggles to become a successful recording artist, author, actor, speaker, social entrepreneur and peace ambassador. Jal has spoken at TED Global, G20, Virgin Unite and UN Humanitarian Day alongside Ban Ki-Moon. He has performed at Live Aid, Nelson Mandela’s Birthday, One Concert for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Montreal Jazz, Vancouver Folk Festival, Glastonbury and Womad.
Jal has collaborated and performed alongside Lauryn Hill, Xavier Rudd, Peter Gabriel, Nelly Furtado, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Joss Stone, Ed Sheeran, Nile Rodgers and Alicia Keys. He has released seven albums and numerous singles in the Afrotech sphere. He has been awarded the Vaclav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent, the Desmond Tutu Reconciliation Award, Hero in the Global Campaign against Violent Extremism – UNESCO, The Hunt Humanitarian Award, The Dresden Peace Prize and The Common Ground Award.
