About

Design and dye your own one-of-a-kind silk scarf in this immersive, hands-on workshop exploring traditional Japanese shibori resist techniques and natural plant-based dyes. Guided by textile artist Omar Zayed, participants will learn foundational folding, binding, and stitched resist methods used to create intricate pattern and texture on silk.

The session begins with a brief introduction to the history of shibori and its contemporary applications. Participants will be introduced to techniques such as itajime (fold and clamp), binding methods, and Nui shibori (stitched), where hand-stitching is used to gather and resist the dye, creating linear and organic surface patterns.

Each participant will design and bind their own pre-mordanted silk scarf before immersing it into a prepared natural dye bath. As the dye develops, the group will discuss the fundamentals of natural dyeing, including fibre properties, mordanting, and sustainable textile practices.

The workshop concludes with the unwrapping reveal—each participant leaves with a finished, wearable silk scarf and the foundational knowledge to continue experimenting with resist dye techniques at home.
