About

Founded in 1974, the Craft & Design Studio Residency at Harbourfront Centre is one of the few programs of its kind in North America. It is the only craft residency in Canada that offers open studio access, mentorship, exhibition opportunities, and public engagement in a waterfront cultural hub. Residents are selected for their strong technical foundations and potential to push the boundaries of their field. Over the decades, the program has launched and sustained the careers of some of Canada’s most influential craft artists and designers.

Harbourfront’s program prioritizes both individual artistic growth and a shared studio culture. Residents not only develop their work in dedicated studio spaces, they teach, exhibit, collaborate, and mentor one another in a professional environment that simulates real-world practice while remaining deeply rooted in experimentation.

Harbourfront Centre’s Craft & Design programs are generously supported by The RBC Foundation, Canadian Heritage, the City of Toronto, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
