Since 1985, Harbourfront Centre has been teaching people of all ages to Learn to Skate! Set against the beautiful shoreline of Lake Ontario, the city’s most scenic rink awaits. The Harbourfront Centre Rink offers a stunning and unique location for classes that are fun, engaging and accessible.
Position Title: Learn to Skate Instructor
Department: Recreational Learning
Number of Vacancies: 6-10
Type of Employment: Part-time, Seasonal
Duration: November 22, 2021-February 27, 2022 (staff training early-mid November; dates to be determined based on staff availability and rink conditions)
Session Dates: Session 1: November 22, 2021-December 19, 2021 / Session 2: January 3, 2022-January 30, 2022 / January 31, 2022-February 27, 2022 (please note classes will run on Family Day, February 21)
Hours of Work: Part-time, Monday-Thursday 5:15-10:15pm
Rate of Pay: $17 per hour
Job Description
Working under the direction of the Assistant Manager–Recreational Learning and supervised by the Head Instructors, the Learn to Skate Instructors will provide skating instruction to participants ranging in age from pre-kindergarten to adult learners. Learn to Skate Instructors will monitor participant progress, provide assistance and encouragement, and pace programming to meet participants’ needs. Candidates will have the ability to skate at the level required for instruction, evaluate participants’ abilities and place them in an appropriate level while promoting health, safety and participation.

Duties
Program Support
Able to sanitize high-touch areas in between group classes or private lessons, as well as participant equipment at the end of each day;
Program Instruction
- Able to teach a variety of skating skills to a diverse range of participants, ranging in age from pre-kindergarten to adult learners;
- Able to prepare, monitor and reset Learn to Skate lobe;
- Able to monitor participant progress, provide assistance and encouragement, and pace programming to meet participants’ needs, ensuring inclusion of all participants remains a top priority;
Program Development
Able to work closely with Learn to Skate Head Instructors to develop programming ideas that meet participants’ needs and abilities and the Recreational Learning standard;
Administrative Duties
Able to assist Head Instructors in administrative tasks such as participant attendance, incident reports, equipment preparation, end-of-session report cards, customer service and other duties as assigned
Skills & Requirements
Essential Criteria
- Strong skating skills with an understanding of the fundamentals of skating;
- Previous experience leading skating instruction (recreational, community-based or other settings);
- Ability to work with participants of all ages (pre-kindergarten to adult learners);
- Ability to remain organized throughout the work day (punctual, timing of program, required materials, etc.);
- Ability to motivate and engage participants during their time in our programs;
- Harbourfront Centre recognizes its heightened duty to protect employees from health and safety risks during the current pandemic. As such, an offer of employment shall be conditional on proof of full COVID-19 vaccination with a vaccine series approved by Health Canada or the World Health Organization.
Desirable Criteria
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification;
- National Coaching Certification Program certification;
- Experience coaching and/or assisting in a focus on hockey, ringette, and/or figure skating
Working Conditions
- Some exposure to inclement weather conditions during Learn to Skate programs (Harbourfront Centre’s Working in Cold Weather and Inclement Weather Policies apply);
- Some rigorous physical activity when demonstrating skating skills/lessons;
- Standing on ice (in skates) for prolonged periods of time;
- Varying work schedule
