Celebrate the grand finale of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s centennial season with a dazzling free outdoor concert at Harbourfront Centre this Canada Day! The evening opens with the hilarity of comedian Martha Chaves, followed by your TSO, led by Barrett Principal Education Conductor & Community Ambassador Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser with special guest Jewelle Blackman, star of the hit Broadway show Hadestown, in a program of celebratory classics and familiar favourites. Gather the whole family for a spectacular night of music and merriment with your TSO in the heart of downtown Toronto. Co-presented by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

About the Toronto Symphony Orchestra

One of Canada’s most respected arts organizations, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is celebrating its Centennial in 2022/23 and has played a vital role in the city’s dynamic cultural life for 100 years. Music Director Gustavo Gimeno brings an expansive artistic vision, intellectual curiosity, and sense of adventure to programming the 93-musician Orchestra. The TSO is committed to serving local and national communities through vibrant performances, extensive educational activities, and impactful community relationships. About Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser, Conductor 

A passionate communicator, Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser brings clarity and meaning to the concert hall, fostering deep connections between audiences and performers. Bartholomew-Poyser is concurrently the Principal Education Conductor and Community Ambassador of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Principal Youth Conductor and Creative Partner of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Artist in Residence and Community Ambassador of Symphony Nova Scotia, and Resident Conductor of Engagement and Education of the San Francisco Symphony. 

About Jewelle Blackman

Jewelle Blackman is an actor, singer-songwriter, playwright, violinist, and Toronto native who can currently be seen starring as Persephone, the ferocious and irreverent goddess of Spring, in the Tony Award Winning Broadway production of Hadestown. Blackman originated the role of Fate in the Canadian premiere of Hadestown at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, and in the Original Broadway Cast. She took over the role of ‘Persephone’ after Tony Award Nominee Amber Gray’s departure. Hadestown earned fourteen Tony Award Nominations and received 8 wins including Best Musical and Best Original Score.  

Additional stage highlights include The Lion King (Mirvish), We Will Rock You (Mirvish), Caroline, Or Change (Acting Up Stage), Dreamgirls (Stage West), and three seasons at the prestigious Stratford Festival. On television Jewelle has been featured on Coroner (CBC), Kim’s Convenience (CBC), Frankie Drake (CBC), Private Eyes (Global), and Shadowhunters (SyFy). Jewelle’s latest original musical Rooted: A Musical Poem, is now available on Spotify as part of First Drafts

The concert stage is an accessible venue. Raised spots accessible by ramps at the back of the venue providing ample sightlines are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
