Join us for an exciting hands-on workshop From Skin 2 Steel and Beyond at 1pm as part of KUUMBA Family Sundays! Led by internationally acclaimed artist, composer and educator Joy Lapps, this hands-on workshop offers participants the chance to explore the steelpan’s history and sound, from West African percussion to tamboo bamboo, iron and steelpan. Each participant will receive an instrument to build a groove together as the session unfolds.
After the workshop, join us for a lively performance at 4:30pm with Joy Lapps, featuring steelpan with some of Toronto’s top musicians.
The music for this performance is funded by the Recording Industries Music Performance Trust Fund in cooperation with the Toronto Musicians’ Association.
About Joy Lapps

The Joy Lapps Project is led by award-winning composer, educator and creative consultant Joy Lapps. From Antiguan and Barbudan descent, Lapps is an internationally lauded artist and composer. Her repertoire teems with Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian-inspired rhythmic and harmonic patterns, plus a fondness for funk and pop music. This program explores music from her latest solo album, Girl in the Yard, alongside a selection of familiar and re-imagined tunes, inviting audiences to listen, respond and engage.
