Overview
Nastasia Y blends her history of Eastern-European folk song with jazz in electronic experiments in a number of different languages on our Stage in the Park, followed by Taiwanese-Canadian pop/R&B favourite Chynna Lewis with a big sound, completed by the soul-filled Adria Kain, embracing her identity as a Queer, masc presenting Black Woman with influences like Frank Ocean and SZA.
About Nastasia Y
Nastasia Y began her career as a jazz/soul vocalist and keyboardist. In her teens, she was heavily inspired by artists such as Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder and Norah Jones. Formerly known as Stacey Y, she has been immersed in Toronto’s bustling multi-cultural music scene since relocating to Canada from Kyiv, Ukraine, at 11. Nastasia grew up in an environment surrounded by folk song – her father, the late Kost Yerofeyev, was the lead singer of the band Ruthenia and was at the forefront of the Ukrainian independence movement in late ’80s Kyiv.
Once settled in Toronto, Canada, she completed her contemporary jazz piano performance degree at Humber College and her Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music Diploma (ARCT) in classical music. She has joined musical groups in Indian, Motown, soul, R&B, European folk and reggae in Toronto and abroad as a keyboard player. By participating in such an eclectic array of genres, she has had the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of Jimmy Cliff, Big Sugar and Ziggy Marley (as part of Kidd Rasta & The Peacemakers), as well as the legendary Shafqat Amanat Ali (as part of the Indo-Pakistani fusion group JoSH).
In her 20’s, Nastasia founded the band DoVira. This group fuses electronic, jazz, rock and experimental sounds with traditional Eastern European musical elements and its electronic off-shoot, DoVira3 or #BalkanElectroExperiment.
Currently, she is making waves in the Toronto music scene as a multilingual vocalist. Nastasia sings in Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Serbian, Macedonian, Bulgarian, Georgian, Crimean Tatar, Roma and Brazilian. Apart from her artistic work, Nastasia is also the CEO and Founder of StereoFlavour, which has provided live music and planning services for weddings and events since its inception in 2010.
About Adria Kain
Soul-filled and honest, Adria Kain takes from her own lived experiences, both painful and joyful, to share stories of love and resilience, embracing her identity as a Queer, masc-presenting Black woman and more. Kain’s approach is a quiet confidence in full command of her spectacular voice. Today’s deeply felt collection of songs details her experience of reconnecting with nature to heal old wounds, grow into the most authentic version of herself and just let go.
Heavily influenced by Frank Ocean, SZA, Nick Hakim and Dijon for their sound and ability to create a visual story through music masterfully, Kain has garnered praise from Fader, Complex, SPIN magazine and many more. She’s opened for BJ The Chicago Kid, Miguel, Ari Lennox and Questlove, featured on PARTYNEXTDOOR’s self-titled second album, and steadily built a name for herself throughout the Toronto scene.
