Overview
Gephilte, a jam-band experiment in Yiddish funk, is the latest boundary-busting project from renowned Canadian Yiddish hip hop provocateur Josh “Socalled” Dolgin. Branching off from his internationally famous hip hop project and taking cues from his funk/klezmer supergroup Abraham Inc, Dolgin has brought together an ensemble of virtuosos to explore Yiddish repertoire. Less about stylistic legitimacy and focused more on using the Yiddish repertoire, Gephilte will make audiences move. The band includes jazz master Alex Moxon, beat maven Mike Essoudry, bass prodigy Caylan Penny, saxophonist Julian Selody (Lemon Bucket Orchestra) and violinist Erica Miller (Ottawa Symphony). Together they create an unrivaled adaptability and swing ensemble, finding their repertoire in Yiddish theatre music, Hassidic nigunim, klezmer and popular Jewish song to provide a rocking, genre-bending zone of musical joy and reflection.
