About

A musical journey from Baghdad to Toronto that combines the warmth of Arabic Maqam and the groove of Africa with the energy and joy of jazz, funk and reggae.

The performance will take you on a captivating voyage through Baghdad, Iraq’s rich sounds and rhythms. The warmth of Maqam and the groove of Africa inherited by Ahmed’s family, Moneka Ruital, will enchant you. Moneka Arabic Jazz consists of six to eight nationalities, each bringing their style and influence to the music they create. Together, they reflect Toronto’s vibrant and diverse music scene, and they are excited to share it with you.

About Moneka Arabic Jazz

This project reflects Ahmed Moneka’s journey and culture in the Toronto music scene. It introduces “Maqam-style” Arabic music skills that he learned in Baghdad, Iraq, where he grew up, mixed with African groove and rhythm inherited from his African descendants, the well-known Moneka family. Because Ahmed’s journey brought him in 2015 to Toronto, Canada, he has been honoured to collaborate with fascinating local musicians and share this heritage and traditions with everyone. Jazz, Maqam and funk are a way to bridge his Afro-Arabic background to the diversity of Toronto performers.
