Overview
Moderator: Jason Ryle
Speaker: Kent Monkman
Fashion is at the centre of art, media, commerce and day-to-day life. Its influence can reinforce or liberate social constructs, artistic expression and cultural sovereignty. How? Fashion is a complex, exclusive and simultaneously accessible medium activated by the performance and performativity of its messenger, bringing attention to the dialogue between identity, body and culture. This panel explores the impact and significance of performance and performativity in Indigenous fashion with Kent Monkman, the renowned artist who “married” Jean-Paul Gaultier in 2018. Jason Ryle, Chair of the Board of Directors at IFA and a producer and curator of Indigenous film, will moderate this panel.
