About Benjai

Benjai, born Rodney Le Blanc, is a legendary soca artist from Arima, Trinidad. Benjai’s musical career began at a young age when he participated in his school’s calypso competitions. As he got older, Benjai competed in sound clashes where young people gathered together in Arima to spar lyrically against each other. His debut single, “Over And Over,” released in 2002, was an instant success, but just the start of his journey.

With an astonishing career spanning over twenty years, Benjai has shaped and contributed to the sound of soca with hit songs such as “Wine To The Side”, “Trini” and “The People’s Champion.” His hit song “Phenomenal,” released in 2014, has amassed over 4.5 million streams on Spotify.

Benjai continues to inspire and influence a new generation of young soca artists with his distinctive and recognizable sound: known as the “Benjai Sound.” His extensive list of collaborators demonstrates both his versatility and status as an artist in demand. After collaborating with Asylum Band in 2002, Benjai was approached a few years later in 2006 by Machel Montano, who was very impressed by Benjai’s composing and performance style. Montano invited Benjai to be a part of the world-famous HD Family, which led to the creation of the hit single, “Amnesty,” an anti-crime anthem, released in 2006. Other collaborators include Bunji Garlin, Mr Killa, Lil Rick, Devika Ram and Tony Prescott. Since touring with Roy Cape All Stars between 2010 and 2015, Benjai has now decided to focus on his solo career to further push his legacy in the Caribbean.
