Presented by Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes (OCPA) and Harbourfront Centre, Calypso Workshop is a two-hour workshop on the rudiments of calypso composition. Participants will work individually and in groups in the workshop. At the end, they will have the opportunity to perform their compositions with percussive instruments.
About Roger Gibbs, aka Rajiman
Rajiman is a calypso and Caribbean acoustic singer/guitarist and recording artist originally from Barbados. Gibbs was a performing member of COBA (Collective of Black Artists) from 1995 to 2013. He has several album recordings, including two with his band Shak Shak titled Hot So (2012) and Shak Shak Party (2017). He received a special award from the Toronto Caribbean Carnival for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of calypso in Canada.
About Henry Gomez, aka King Cosmos
King Cosmos is a Canadian calypso monarch, composer, recording artist, musician and actor rated among Canada’s top calypsonians. He has just released Trinbago is Home, his patriotic, nation-building calypso, arranged by Leston Paul and available on all streaming platforms. He has won a Canadian Urban Music Award, a Canadian Reggae Music Award and a Sunshine Award nominee. He also holds an MA and MFA from York University. He notably performs his original compositions like Jammin, Santa Bring My Baby Home and Put it in Writing and cover versions of calypsos by Kitch and Mighty Sparrow. In addition to performing, King Cosmos keeps a busy schedule as the President of OCPA and a board member of the Harriet Tubman Institute and Festival Management Committee.
