About

The Labyrinth Ensemble is dedicated to the experimentation and promotion of modal music traditions of Central, West, South Asia and the Mediterranean. Trained to appreciate their particularities without compromise, the Ensemble unites the distinct but historically connected music on their own terms, rather than altering tunings and rhythms to match European music theory, as is often the norm. Featuring instruments from tonbak to gayageum to saxophone, the ensemble reflects Toronto’s unique cultural landscape and limitless possibilities for cross-cultural creation.

About Labyrinth Ensemble

Back from their Southern Ontario tour, this quintet version of the Labyrinth Ensemble draws from four years of training with artists around the globe. One such mentor is Ross Daly, one of the world’s foremost voices in modal music, who has carried the traditions of Central and West Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean forward while expanding them into bold, contemporary forms. His 35+ albums serve as inspiration for this performance, particularly his piece “Acalypha” which draws from the Ancient Greek name for the Copper Leaf plant. This performance will feature Julian Anderson-Bowes, Roa (HyunYoung) Lee, Naomi McCarroll-Butler, Sasan Salaseli, and Araz Salek from the Labyrinth Ensemble.
