About

Studio F Minus, an art collective that works with world-class engineers and artists to create innovative and provocative public art installations, brings one of their renowned works to Harbourfront Centre with A Dream of Pastures. Created in 2008 for Toronto’s Nuit Blanche festival, curious viewers are invited to pedal a stationary bicycle to activate a projection screen that animates images of a running horse through a fictitious landscape.

Sitting in the saddle, the viewer’s own shadow aligns with the horse, casting them as a jockey in a projected, fantasy world. The faster you peddle, the quicker the horse breaks into a gallop, running through empty pastures of light and shadow. Ride, Sally, Ride.

About Studio-F Minus

Studio F Minus (SFM) is led by Brad Hindson and Michael Simon. We collaborate with a network of world-class fabricators, engineers, and technologists, creating public conversations through art.

Two core principles drive our creative process: considering the public experience, and capturing public values. Because each site we create for is different, each of our artworks is unique.

Artworks in public spaces are declarations of public values. As such, it is imperative that the design process begins with an effort to understand the community that inhabits and has inhabited our site so that a public artwork can enshrine the qualities and traits that resonate most with that community.

Every place engenders a different type of engagement. So, when conceiving an artwork, SFM attempts to consider how the site’s conditions will shape a community’s interaction with an artwork. An artwork experienced at speed on a commuter line is designed to be an icon, while an artwork in a park may be a quieter object for meditation and contemplation.
