About

Bring your own sewing machine to learn free-motion embroidery and quilting techniques in this two-day course. Students will learn to safely use their sewing machines’ free-motion features to create several small or one large playful sampler. Students should be comfortable working with their sewing machines and troubleshooting, though the instructor will be available to provide basic support.

Materials included in the workshop are:

  • Colourful cotton fabrics
  • Other fun fabrics and surfaces, including plastic bags
  • Yarns
  • Medium-to-large scissors
  • Two polyester Güttermann thread bobbins (110 yards each; random colour)
  • Quilt batting

Students will provide these materials for themselves:

  • Sewing machine with free-motion capabilities
  • Free-motion foot compatible with their sewing machine
  • Polyester or any thread that works for you and your machine
  • Small, sharp scissors (such as embroidery scissors or snips)
  • Any fabric of your choice (optional)

Yes, any cancellations 5+ business days away from the start date of when your workshop begins is eligible for a refund.

Our studios are dedicated to our full-time Artists-in-Residence program; no studio access is allowed outside of the residency. The only exception is participants taking classes, who may only remain in the studio during actual class time.

You must apply for the program, follow the guidelines and meet the criteria required of applicants. This information can be found on our website (Residency Program Information) page. Applications open once a year in January and close in March.

The Craft & Design studios are 18+ only. However, we do have a craft-focused program through our School Visits department that specializes in that. For more information, you can visit the School Visits page on our website.
