We are currently looking to bring on board a passionate, organized and student-centered Educator, Indigenous Studies to support in the daily execution of School Visits programming.

Department: School Visits

Reporting To: Manager, School Visits

Type of Employment: Contract

Hours of Work:  Hours of work will vary based on need and program registrations; as such, work schedule can range from 0-5 days per week

Wage: $23 per hour

Work Location: At our lakeside campus in downtown Toronto

 

Summary of Function

An Educator, Indigenous Studies is responsible for the delivery of our Indigenous Studies programs (Exploring Truth and Reconciliation).  Educators set up, deliver programming and clean up for their scheduled workshops.  In addition to teaching workshops, Educators highlight Harbourfront Centre, our current galleries and exhibitions, and upcoming programs with visiting groups.  The candidate will also support in the development, renewal and evaluation of all Indigenous Studies School Visits programs.

Candidates will self-identify as a member of one or more First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit communities.  Candidates should have the ability to facilitate and lead enriching workshops while promoting the health, safety and participation of students.  As an Educator, Indigenous Studies an awareness of the needs of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students within our workshops is important.

 

Duties

  • Teach a variety of Indigenous Studies workshops to students, ranging in age from pre-kindergarten to grade 12.
  • Willingness to teach other School Visits programs (Visual Arts, Urban Studies and/or Performing Arts).
  • Monitor and evaluate programs to ensure they meet the needs of students and teachers, with a strong emphasis on experiential learning.
  • Provide superior customer service to visiting teachers and student groups.
  • Take ownership of student safety during an emergency procedure.
  • Assist in program development, renewal and evaluation for Indigenous Studies School Visits programs keeping in mind current best practices in Arts Education and revisions to Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum documents.
  • Assist in the review and development of Pre and Post Visit Packages for all Indigenous Studies School Visits programs.
  • Support co-op students, interns and/or student teachers when assigned.

Requirements

  • Relevant teaching experience and/or leading workshops with children and youth in any formal or informal setting (school, gallery, museum, before/after school program, camp).
  • Able to stand for long period of time and lift various materials and equipment up to 40lbs.
  • Excellent communication skills, including an ability to handle potentially difficult situations with diplomacy.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills within a classroom setting.
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Curriculum and program development experience is an asset.
  • Is Bilingual (English – French) is considered an asset.
  • As a condition of employment, a Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to Harbourfront Centre will be required of the successful candidate. The cost of this screening is to be covered by the incumbent.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Non-Canadian applicants must have a valid employment Visa and proper documentation authorizing their ability to work in Canada.
  • This role is based in Toronto. The candidate must be able to work on site at our lakeside campus.
