About
Indigo dyeing is not only a symbol of craftsmanship but also a vital thread in the cultural heritage of Chinese diasporic communities. This exhibition explores how the art of indigo dyeing expresses identity and cultural adaptation, particularly how Chinese and other Asian communities integrate tradition and modernity to build a future of multicultural coexistence in new environments.
Canada is often described as a vibrant tapestry woven from people of all backgrounds. It is shaped by inclusiveness and resilience, fostering open-mindedness among its diverse communities. Similarly, the fusion of nature and culture in indigo works reflects the resilience and creativity of migrant communities.
At the heart of this project is the recognition that Taiwan, too, is an island shaped over centuries by waves of migration from across Asia. The craft of indigo dyeing has taken root and flourished here, evolving into a distinctive local tradition. Our team has long sought to reconnect with the broken threads of Taiwan’s indigo history — preserving and passing down traditional techniques and innovating them to meet contemporary needs.
This exhibition resonates with the experiences of Chinese immigrants globally, forging meaningful connections through shared heritage. Through art and craftsmanship, we aim to highlight how Chinese diasporic communities transcend cultural boundaries to build a more inclusive and sustainable future. This effort deepens the legacy of Taiwan’s indigo culture and shares its spirit with the world as an active practice of multicultural coexistence.
