Experience a musical journey like no other as Ménestrel performs old music in an intimate show with their unique blend of voices, plucked strings and violin. Their performance, a fusion of ayres and ballads, will recount the transience of good fortune in the life of a voyager. In The Nine Maidens, these English-language folk songs will paint vivid imagery of age-old expeditions, daring escapes and voyaging delights. The program is a captivating mix of music by Purcell, Dowland, Gilles Binchois, and Guillaume de Machaut.

About Ménestrel

Ménestrel is an alternative early music group that Janelle Lucyk and Kerry Bursey co-founded, mixing early repertoire with oral folk traditions. Lucyk is a singer and producer among an emerging generation of Canadian artists specializing in early music and historically informed performance, taking ideas from conception to the stage. Bursey is a tenor and plucked string instrumentalist whose voice is appreciated for its luminous quality and as a sought-after lutenist known for his self-accompaniment. In 2022 and 2023, Ménestrel toured their production Messiah-on-the-go!, congregating 20 emerging performers from across Canada who were featured in historic Nova Scotian venues. This year, touring continues across Canada and in Europe.
