Overview

The nationally renowned JUNO-nominated band Autorickshaw blends jazz, folk, pop and Indian classical music ranging from Leonard Cohen to Indo-Brazilian fusion, Peter Gabriel to Bollywood hits. Known for giving the audience a world-fusion experience on the stage, Autorickshaw features the sultry vocals of lead vocalist Suba Sankaran, anchored by the melodic bass lines and beatboxing of Dylan Bell over intricate Indian percussion by Ed Hanley.

About Autorickshaw

Autorickshaw’s music lies on the cultural edge of contemporary jazz, funk and folk, quickly rubbing shoulders with India’s classical and popular music. Formed in 2003, Autorickshaw is one of the most intriguing acts in the world music and jazz landscapes, garnering 2004, 2007 and 2017 JUNO nominations for World Music Album of the Year, winning a Canadian Independent Music Award in 2005 and a John Lennon Songwriting Competition Grand Prize in World Music and the CAPACOA Touring Artist of the Year award, both in 2008, among others.

Autorickshaw has toured extensively across Canada, the US, the UK, Europe, India and Nepal, and the band is committed to its role as music educators through school performances, lecture demonstrations, workshops and masterclasses on topics as diverse as jazz improvisation, south Indian and western vocal/choral technique and percussion from around the world.
