About
This three-week ceramics course introduces participants to handbuilding in clay through an exploration of functional and sculptural form, surface and texture. Open to beginners and those with some experience, the course emphasizes foundational techniques while allowing space for experimentation and personal direction. Participants will learn pinch and slab construction methods, with a focus on structure, proportion and how forms occupy space.
Over the first two weeks, students will build and refine one to two small handbuilt objects — such as a planter, vessel or sculptural form — while exploring surface treatments including texture, pattern and underglaze. In the final week, participants will be introduced to basic glazing techniques, learning how glazes interact with form and surface. All work will be kiln-fired by the studio and ready for pickup after the course concludes. This course prioritizes process over perfection and is designed for those interested in developing confidence with clay, slowing down their making process and gaining a clearer understanding of handbuilding from start to finish.
