Textile Arts – Changing the Social Fabric

How can you use art to inspire positive social change?

Program Description

Activists unite! Students will be presented with historical and contemporary artworks that advocate for social change and bring attention to local, national and global issues. Students will create a two-dimensional textile work that expresses a ‘call to action’ using recycled fabric, collage, fibre arts and hand sewing techniques.

Program Objectives

By the end of the Textile Arts – Changing the Social Fabric program, students will:

  • Explore the effectiveness of public art as a tool to elicit social change while gaining an appreciation for the cultural context of each issue.
  • Experiment with recycled fabrics, collage, fibre arts and hand sewing techniques.
  • Produce a two-dimensional textile work based on a ‘call to action’ for social change.
