About

The free one-month Sailing Instructor-in-Training program introduces young sailors who show interest in sailing, childcare and education to the responsibilities and daily procedures of Junior Sail Camp.

The overall goal of the Sailing IIT Program is to train future Sailing Instructors and Camp Counsellors in the day-to-day operations of sailing. This program requires participants to experience both on-land and on-water camp procedures and situations and be evaluated on their decision-making within those environments.

All IITs who complete this course are guaranteed an interview at THNC for the following year’s Junior Sail Camps Staff.

Marine camps occur in Toronto’s Inner Harbour and/or around the Toronto Islands, allowing campers to explore this unique setting under the guidance of experienced and well-trained instructors. Most marine programs will take place outdoors and on water (weather permitting). Quality indoor programming will be provided on inclement weather days.

Safety is our priority — all campers in our marine programs are provided with a Personal Floatation Device (PFD), and proper use of the PFD is strictly enforced. Campers are welcome to use their own Transport Canada approved PFDs if they prefer.
In addition, all iCANSail, Junior Seadogs, and CANSail 1 participants are provided with a helmet, which must always be worn while on the water.
Helmets are also available for participants of other sailing camps and may be made mandatory at the discretion of our Sailing Camps Instructors.

Prerequisite: Must have CANSail certification of any level prior to enrolling in this program.

Certificate: Successful candidates will receive an interview at THNC for the following year’s Sail Camp staff.

Registration: Please note that this course is offered directly through the THNC Sailing School. To register for this course, please do so through the Sail Camp webpage of the THNC website.

Please Note: Prior to arriving at camp, IITs will be asked to fill in an information sheet to give our staff a better understanding of the individual’s motivation. There is also an overnight excursion during each session. IITs are encouraged to attend, as it serves as a valuable tool in team building. All participants are required to work with a wide range of age groups.

Sailing campers are under the guidance of experienced and well-trained instructors from our partner, Toronto Harbour Nautical Centre.
