Shannon Weston

Shannon Weston is a graduate of Sheridan College’s Crafts and Design program majoring in Ceramics. She creates stylized figurative ceramic sculptures that are adorned with tactile designs inspired by African scarification. Shannon is fascinated by body art and modification. Her work is based on ideas of self-discovery through cultural practice. Throughout her work, Shannon focuses on the preservation of her culture through material practices by exploring terra sigillata, handbuilding and pit firing techniques. Developing this work has allowed her to reconnect with her African heritage, promote black beauty, strength and resilience with the overall hope that viewers will become more enlightened, informed and accepting of persons living in the western society who bear these scars.

Shannon was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence (Ceramics) at Harbourfront Centre in 2020.
