Amnesty International's Global Refugee Village
July 1, 2009

Amnnesty International will join refugee communities from countries around the world such as Eritrea, Colombia, Somalia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Iraq, El Salvador and Ethiopia in a global refugee village. The refugee communities in the village provide engaging and interactive activities which reflect the culture and contributions of the community to Canada. Activities include music, dance, games, arts, traditional dress, make up, and lifestyle. They explain why people have been forced to flee their country, and   contributions their communities have made to Canada.

In the various refugee villages’ participants will discover various aspects of the cultures represented including:

  • Clothing, makeup: visitors can try on articles of clothing or wear make up (henna), sample food
  • Writing in native script: visitors can be taught how to write their name in a foreign script
  • Musical instruments: visitors can attempt to play unique instruments.

Amnesty will host a table which will provide information on the conflict in each of the countries represented and provide an action for members of the public to respond to for each one of the countries.

There will also be various folk dances and small musical performances from the various countries participating throughout the day.
