Café con Pan
November 7-8, 2009
Café con Pan performs the traditional music of southern Veracruz, Mexico called Son Jarocho. The members initially learned the music in the oral tradition from farmers in the town of Santiago Tuxtla and San Andrés Tuxtla, and have since incorporated local handmade instruments into their repertoire including the jarana, pandero tlacotalpeño, guitarra de son and the Leona. Poetic improvisation, call-and-response singing, vigorous strumming and percussive zapateado dancing make for an engaging and uplifting performance.
Café con Pan has produced eight recordings and an educational game based on the traditional songs of southern Veracruz. In 1999, the group started the Anona Music Project, documenting the music in the countryside as well as the oral history of the Tuxtlas region.
