Barbara Croall is Odawa (Giniw dodem, Manitoulin Island) and balances her time between work in outdoor education rooted in traditional Anishhinaabe teachings, volunteer work with aboriginal youth and composing music. She is a graduate of the Hochschule fur Musik in Munich, Germany and holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto where she was the recipient of the Glenn Gould Award in Composition in 1989. Barbara’s music has been premiered at international festivals in Lithuania, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, the UK and Canada.
Anita McAlister is an active freelancer in the Toronto area, performing regularly with such groups as the National Ballet Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the Esprit Orchestra, and Soundstreams. Anita is Principal Trumpet of the Toronto Philharmonia. A member of the ARRAY Ensemble and a member of the Hannaford Street Silver Band. She is on Faculty at the University of Toronto and at Wilfrid Laurier University, and is director of the Hannaford Youth Program.

Renowned Canadian cellist Shauna Rolston leads outstanding student cellists from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music in music by Elgar, Massenet, Kreisler and others, arranged for cello solo, duo, and ensemble. As a prelude, Barbara Croall (cedar flutes and First Nation drum) and Anita McAlister (trumpet and conch shell) perform Croall’s Calling from Different Directions
Calling from Different Directions was composed for the Music Garden in Summer 2008. It runs about six minutes.
