Taught by the Craft Studio artists-in-residence, these beginner courses for adults are an excellent creative challenge. All courses take place in the Craft Studio. All classes are subject to change without notice.
Pre-registration with the studio is required.
No previous throwing experience required! Learn to make cups, vases and bowls on the pottery wheel and handbuilding. Techniques can include throwing, coiling, slab, trimming, decoration and finishing your pieces.
Some previous throwing experience required. The Intermediate Class is a follow-up course to further the basic techniques learned in the introductory class. The focus is on developing skills to produce somewhat larger pieces and how to alter and add on to wheel thrown forms to produce other types of vessels such as pitchers or teapots.
This course covers solid (ie. paperweights) and blown forms (cups, bowls, plates), colour application, hot, cold techniques and use of studio equipment.
What to wear: lightweight-but-protective clothing made of natural fibres, closed toed shoes, cotton tube socks with the toes cut off (for arm protection), sunglasses, and something to tie back long hair.
These courses are designed for beginner and intermediate level students. Instructors rotate from session to session, providing an opportunity to learn different skills. Students can expect to finish two or three projects, learning skills such as sawing, filing, soldering, cuttle fish casting, stone setting, wire-work and finishing. Completed projects could include rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings, brooches and cufflinks.
No experience required! Students learn a wide range of jewellery techniques (piercing, soldering, drilling, filing, polishing, surface techniques etc...) through creating samples and finished pieces. By the end of the class students will complete a silver band ring (for yourself or someone else), a silver cast piece of your choice (ring, pendant, cufflinks etc...) and a final project of your choice. Registration includes all supplies (including copper and brass) - silver is extra, but very affordable.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Jewellery or previous metalsmithing experience. Intermediate class content varies with instructor. Examples of previous Intermediate topics covered: Colour and materials, small hollow forms, epoxy enamel, chain making, stone setting etc ... Registration includes all supplies (including copper and brass) - silver is extra, but very affordable.
Craft Studio programmes are generously supported by Canadian Heritage, the City of Toronto, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for The Arts - Jean A. Chalmers Fund for the Crafts.
