Dance at Harbourfront Centre
Contemporary dance is one of the core elements of Harbourfront Centre programming, as evidenced by the Fleck Dance Theatre (formerly the Premiere Dance Theatre), constructed in 1983 — the first stage in Canada to be built specifically for dance. Today dance is a component of many different programmes.
Local and Canadian dance expression has exploded with rich and varied expressions found in Toronto. These and other Canadian troupes are featured in the NextSteps series presented annually on Harbourfront Centre stages. Complementing the Canadian troupes are the international dance companies which are featured as part of the annual World Stage international performance series.
Community dance companies, both Canadian and international, are a frequent component of the summer World Routes weekend festival series. In addition dance performances can be found as part of the HarbourKids family programming and included in the Summer Music in the Garden series.
